Angela M. Pierce

Work Description: Oil

Biography:

I have been drawing and painting since childhood. I continued studying art and education at Towson University where I earned a BS Degree in Art Education. I spent an entire career teaching young students art in public and charter schools and summer camps. My nature is to be the planner and the problem solver; always creating, improving, and evolving how to inspire those young minds. Through teaching, my knowledge grows from my experiences and my students. Today, I am inspired by many artists in my local community. I love studying art history and learning from all genres of painting. In my work, you can see the art influences of Impressionists to old masters, and today’s modern art painters.

When I am creating and painting, inspirations come from a view from a window, a walk through the neighborhood, a drive through rural landscapes, a garden, or an arrangement on a table. I am constantly taking pictures, and I primarily use my own photographs for my references.

As an artist, drawing and designing are the most important and challenging parts of creating a painting. The ideas I start out with in the composition are constantly changed until the shapes and colors work together. The most satisfying part of the oil painting process is discovering the possibilities of the paint. There are endless techniques and color combinations to choose from. I love that I can make changes to my painting by rubbing or scraping out and painting over. One of my teachers, Charle Miano, tells his students to keep growing and stay humble with a beginner’s mind when painting.
