Biography:
Brigitte Bowden has always been interested in all forms of art. She started painting in her teens and continued throughout her life.
While traveling with her husband during his military service, she studied painting in different parts of the United States and overseas.
Bowden received her undergraduate and Masters of Education degrees from Salisbury University. During her career in education, art always played an important role, first as teacher and then as an administrator. In her position as coordinator of instruction for the Worcester County Public Schools, her responsibilities included the coordination and supervision of the school system’s visual arts program.
"The creative process of painting and the challenge that each work presents is the driving force in my work. I find inspiration in nature, colors, patterns, life experiences and the very act of creating. My work is done mostly in oil on canvas or linen, but I also enjoy working in acrylic and watercolor.
In my landscapes I want to show the mood, mystique and atmosphere of the place. The Eastern Shore, with its subtle beauty, provides unlimited subjects to paint. Traveling to new locations is always an eye-opening experience since the light and the character of the environment are inherently different.
My flower paintings are a celebration of nature’s colors and mysteries. I enjoy creating strong designs and color harmonies to show a flower’s personality. In all my paintings I focus on the underlying abstract design. This, of course, is most evident in my non-objective pieces. Usually I approach an abstract piece with an idea and then find techniques and materials to capture the concept. I use texture to build up areas in my abstract paintings.
I want to record and share the beauty of life. I enjoy the act of painting and the happiness that painting gives me."
Brigitte Bowden is a member of the Worcester County Arts Council in Berlin, MD, the Art Institute and Gallery, Salisbury, MD, the Art League of Ocean City, MD and the Von Liebig Art Center in Naples, FL.
