Barbara Johnson

Worcester County Arts Council Board of Directors - Director

Barbara Johnson is a retired elementary school teacher and media specialist.  Born and raised in the Chicago area, she graduated from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She met her husband, Bob, on a student tour in Europe. Due to Bob’s career in the U.S. Air Force, they traveled around the US until settling down in Bowie, Maryland to start a family and non-military career. Barbara spent her time juggling her children’s sports and school activities, as well as being a board member of the American Association of University Women.

When her husband was transferred to Cary, North Carolina Barbara returned to being an elementary school teacher. They continued to support their children in their high school and college academics and sports, mostly soccer and swimming. As a Cary resident, Barbara volunteered in the restoration of the Page Walker Hotel, participated in art programs with Duke Gardens and Duke Homestead, and served as a board member for a beach condominium.

In order to be closer to their children and grandchildren, Barbara and Bob settled in Berlin, Maryland. Since moving to the Eastern Shore, Barbara has volunteered with Rackliffe House and Worcester County Arts Council (WCAC). Barbara looks forward to using her experiences with WCAC and community leaders to encourage art programs throughout the country.
