WORK DESCRIPTION:
Oil
BIOGRAPHY:
Martha Pileggi has been exhibiting her artwork since 1985 and has worked in many mediums during that time. Initially known for her hand-painted tiles and sinks and large floral watercolors, she now works almost exclusively in oils. Currently Martha has been traveling throughout the Delmarva Peninsula producing the majority of paintings, “Plein Air.” She especially enjoys painting the marsh, garden, and farm scenes that are so abundant on the Peninsula. “There are so many beautiful spots to paint and I take every view as a challenge no matter where I am.”
Martha switched to oils from watercolors several years ago and has devoted the majority of her time to landscape painting. The use of traditional high quality oils with a minimum of mediums when outdoors makes her painting experience efficient and enjoyable and archival. “The hardest part is simplifying what I see and eliminating so many details.”
She prepared her Plein Air panels in bulk in the spring of each year. Unprimed birch is treated with two coats of clear shellac, then three layers of gesso, and finally sanded. Many times if she is not happy with a painting, she sands the panel and uses it again. In the spring, summer, and fall, she paints exclusively outdoors. In the winter, when the weather is bad, she fall back on still life, portrait, and figure painting.
Martha has had many careers starting as a package designer, then Advertising Manager, Freelance Graphic Artist, Home Decor designer preparing artwork for heat transferred doormats. She has also painted large tile murals and sinks for many homes on the eastern shore. Martha enjoys all aspects and mediums of art-including etching, engraving, and jewelry design.
